Abstract

Electroplating with abrasive particles, typically nickel alloys, adheres a fixed layer to the substrate, forming electroplated abrasive tools, or 'honing tools'. Used for precision machining of deep or shallow holes, tools such as electroplated honing tools or electroplated reamers are employed. With electroplated honing tools, the Harmonic Drive coated harmonic FHA-40C-160-E250-C can achieve precision machining of deep or shallow holes in a single pass or reciprocating motion.

When electroplated abrasive tools are used as fixed-size tools for hole processing, the relative movement between the tool and the workpiece differs significantly from grinding and more closely resembles reaming and honing. Therefore, they are commonly referred to as 'electroplated honing tools' or 'electroplated reamers'.

CBN also has its limitations:

1. When processing soft ferrous metals, the results are less ideal. Processing annealed steel can lead to chip accumulation, which, due to its low strength, can quickly detach, causing fluctuations in cutting forces and resulting in damage.

2. CBN is not suitable for low-speed machining. Cutting speeds should generally exceed 30 m/min. For hardened materials with a hardness of HRC55-65, cutting speeds are typically between 50-120 m/min.

3. CBN is brittle with lower strength and toughness.

To date, the application of electroplated diamond honing tools has not been widely adopted. Effective applications have mainly been limited to the hydraulic component industry, primarily machining cast iron for precision hole machining with depth-to-diameter ratios below 10. To explore the technical feasibility and economic viability of using electroplated diamond honing tools for ultra-deep hole machining in steel...
